75 DOLLAR BILL - I Was Real DLP (DLX-US-Press) (back ins tock - 75 DOLLAR BILL is one of the essential groups at the heart of NYC's underground. Driven by the telepathic union of CHE CHEN's microtonal electric guitar and RICK BROWN's odd metered percussion their long-form sound is unmistakable and compelling. On their third album I Was Real, the group expands in bold new directions, embracing brilliant fuller orchestrations, joyous rockers and entrancing new textures. The album is 75 Dollar Bill's third, featuring new directions accompanying the band's previously established interest in sprawling, unusual grooves and microtonal melodies. The record is enhanced by the presence of eight additional players in various combinations over its nine tracks—but also shows off the duo's strength when stripped down to the core. Requiring a variety of approaches, the album was recorded over a four-year period, in four different studios, with the band's closest associates and collaborators in a range of different ensemble configurations. The album also features several "studio as instrument" constructions that harken back to the collage-experiments of the band's early cassette tapes, while at the same time pointing to territories altogether new. Double-LP version presented in a heavy tip-on gatefold jacket with textured clothe wrap and matte foil stamping.) 45.00
ART & TECHNIQUE - Clima X LP (bfe - Reissue of the fantastic debut LP from France's pioneer avant-electronic unit ART & TECHNIQUE. Originally released in 1981 by Hi-Tech records. Haunting obscure minimal electronic sounds, ambient and atmospheric ventures, abstract minimal wave with some ethnic elements. And excellent use of rhythm boxes, sound generators and strange vocals, reminds of 23 Skidoo's “7 songs”, early Muslimgauze, O Yuki Conjugate´s sound and the atmospheres of Jon Gibson or Jon Hasell. Re-mastered by former member Bernard Filipetti. Limited edition of 300 copies.) 20.00
BERNARD FORT - Fractals / Brain Fever LP (edtions mego - Composed at the GMVL from December 1979 to September 1981, this work was commissioned by Fnac. Fractals are mathematical oddities that, when crossing our path, turn the smallest island into an immensity to be explored. FRACTALS is a series of short studies, all based on the same sound source. Seeking in the sound and its very logic a proposal upon which a construction is elaborated, each Fractal remains open and is a mere fragment of itself. FRACTALS, music pieces sculpted in four dimensions, are vast microcosms that can only be inhabited by the mind. Each Fractal can be approached from several angles, far, near, etc. Some can be listened to at different speeds, forwards or backwards. FRACTALS: amorphous and endless music pieces whose centre is everywhere and circumference nowhere.)21.00
BERNARD PARMEGIANI - Violostries LP (editions mego - Embossed cover artwork, incl. printed inner sleeve Violostries (1963/64), 16’39 Premiered and recorded in April 1965 at the Royan Festival - France, by Devy Erlih (violin) & Bernard Parmegiani (sound projection). Violostries represents the intersection of several musical research directions, presented as two simultaneous dialogues - composer/performer and instrument/orchestra.) 21.00
BIG BLOOD - Operate Spaceship Earth Properly LP (feeding tube - 2018 repress, on splatter vinyl. "Our last Big Blood release was the idiosyncratic Ant Farm, Colleen and Caleb's collaboration with the late composer Elliott Schwartz, which presented music designed for a museum installation. With Operate Spaceship Earth Properly, Big Blood return to the vast universe of strangeness they explore inside their own skin. Now fully incorporating the vocals and guitar of their daughter Quinnisa(previously a 'secret weapon' unveiled mostly at live shows, as the Dictators once did with Handsome Dick Manitoba), Big Blood sound nutsier and wilder than ever. Spaceship Earth is a massively psychedelic investigation of science fiction, science fact and the mythic spot where they reconcile. Specifically referring to the work of writers such as Octavia Butler, Ursula K. Le Guin and Buckminster Fuller, the music mixes the thunder of riff-thuggery with vocals beamed in from planet Comus and beat-slaps equally indebted to the Purple Revolutionary and the Neue Deutsche Welle. The combination is head-spinning and gloriously original but will be immediately identifiable as Big Blood by anyone who knows the band's music. I mean, it's so freaking strange and so freaking Maine, who else could it be?" --Byron Coley, 2018) 25.00
CHUCK JOHNSON - Balsams LP (vdsq -Chuck Johnson's pedal steel guitar debut delivers a group of pieces for ambient meditation. Recorded in a single two-week session during late 2015, and subsequently arranged/constructed/treated in the studio in spring of 2016, Balsams is awash in layers of tonal perfection. The album constantly evolves while maintaining a unified approach across both sides. Balsams is a record that lives outside genre and time, one that continues to develop with each successive deep listen. A unique expansion in the VDSQ catalog, Balsams is an album created in the hopes of providing solace and regenerative energies for many years to come.) 25.00
DAME AREA - La Soluzione É Una LP (bfe - 6 new songs by industrial tribalism / minimal wave duo DAME AREA. Inspired by Coil, Suicide, Franco Battiato, Gary Numan and Dino Buzzati. Dame Area surges from Barcelona’s fertile underground scene and revisits the postindustrial aesthetic with a dissident and a free spirit approach through tribal rythms, hypnotic keyboards, oniric sounds and eerie vocals.) 18.00
DOUG HAMMOND - spaces LP (manufactured - "Released in 1982, Spaces features alto saxophonist Steve Coleman and cellist Muneer Abdul Fataah writing with Hammond as the Doug Hammond Trio, with guests Byard Lancaster (Alto Saxophone, Flute) and Kirk Lightsey (piano). It's an album is full of strong, succinct statements that, according to Musician Magazine (Cliff Tinder, 1982), belie an abstract, soulful approach to free jazz. The exhilarating cello and angular horns show each player's experience and artistry while the heady, asymmetrical rhythmic concepts of Hammond and Steve Coleman add a playfulness to the dissonance. Creative, dynamic, modern, Tinder notes that Spaces gives any jazz master a run for their money.“) 26.00
FRANCE GALL - Baby Pop LP (thrid man - France Gall was a prolific French vocalist and performer, remembered as one of the central figures of the 1960s yé-yé pop movement. Aligning catchy, spirited rhythms with lighthearted lyrics and drawing from the beat music a la early Beatles and Hollies, the yé-yé artists promoted a sort of new freedom of expression and breaking down of social barriers in post-WWII France. Third Man Records is beyond honored to bring this music to a larger audience by issuing the first authorized North American vinyl pressings of these titles, some of the most brilliant highlights from Gall's catalog. Baby Pop is not only an important album for France herself, it is also a hugely important record for the entire yé-yé scene. Baby Pop hinted at the musical direction that yé-yé was headed in much the same way Revolver and Pet Sounds did in the UK and USA. Baby Pop is more mature and varied than her earlier more bubblegum releases. You will still find a wonderfully cheesy tracks like 'L'Amerique' here and there but with the impossibly infectious title track and songs like the Gainsbourg penned 'Nous Ne Sommes Va-T'en' and the groovy Farfisa-driven 'Faut-Il que Je T'Aime' we welcome a new France Gall and say hello to some of the fi nest pop music ever released in French or any language.“) 33.00
FRANCE GALL - Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son LP (thrid man - France Gall was a prolific French vocalist and performer, remembered as one of the central figures of the 1960s yé-yé pop movement. While France Gall had been releasing music since she was 16 it wasn't until she took the Grand Prix at the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest with her rendition of Serge Gainsbourg's 'Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son' that she would be catapulted to the top of the swinging yé-yé scene alongside the likes of Francoise Hardy, Sylvie Vartan and Bridgette Bardot. This record contains two of France's most loved tracks, 'Poupée de Cire' and 'Laisse Tomber Les Filles' also penned by Gainsbourg. She recorded versions of the title track in French, German, Italian and Japanese and was now an international pop superstar. At the time France was dismissed by many as making fluffy ultra-commercial pop hits but her music stands the test of time far better than most, as not many were making music of this consistent high quality. Highly recommended.“) 33.00
FRANCE GALL - 1968 LP (third man - "France Gall was a prolific French vocalist and performer, remembered as one of the central figures of the 1960s yé-yé pop movement. Without a doubt this is the weirdest France Gall record. 1968 dives further into the psychedelia that she was hinting at on Baby Pop. Even with addition of sitars and echoes of The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks and Pet Sounds era Beach Boys all over this record it is still 100% French and could only have been made by France Gall. The addition of English expat producer/arranger, David Whitaker, brought a new and welcome airiness to the mix that was lacking on Gall's earlier recordings. The album contains 2 of Serge Gainsbourg's strangest and most out-there arrangements, 'Nefertiti' and 'Teenie Weenie Boppie' about an LSD trip gone horribly wrong. 1968 is an absolutely essential addition to any record collection.“) 33.00
HORACE TAPSCOTT CONDUCTING THE PAN-AFRIKAN PEOPLES ARKESTRA - the call LP (outernational - Available on vinyl for the first time in 40 years, Outernational Sounds presents Horace Tapscott's burning, spiritualized 1978 set, The Call. One of the unsung giants of jazz music, the composer, bandleader, arranger, pianist and community activist Tapscott was the undisputed keystone of the grassroots Los Angeles jazz scene. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, his radical community arts and music formations the UGMA(Underground Musicians Association) and his protean big band, the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, were at the epicenter of music, culture, and politics in the Los Angeles area. Hundreds of musicians passed through these groups and played their part. Major figures such as Arthur Blythe, Azar Lawrence, Jimmy Woods, John Carter, Bobby Bradford, Sonny Criss, Ndugu Chancler, and dozens of others all paid dues or just got down with Tapscott, not to mention the core Arkestra regulars who have since become celebrated names; Nate Morgan, Jesse Sharps, Adele Sebastian, Dadisi Komolafe, and Gary Bias, to mention only a few. Tapscott and the Arkestra were down on the ground -- playing fundraisers in parks and streets, organizing teach-ins and workshops for young and old, mixing it with radical theater groups, firebrand poets, political radicals, Black separatists, community groups, and churches. As a result of this grassroots community focus and Tapscott's antipathy to the music industry, the Arkestra didn't record for nearly two decades. That only changed when long-time jazz fan Tom Albach started Nimbus Records. The label was initiated specifically in order to document Tapscott and his circle, and the first three records showcased Horace and the Arkestra. The Call was put together from two studio sessions in April 1978, one at Hollywood Sage and Sound, and one at United Western -- the latter session had the addition of a string section, who can be heard on the moody Cal Masseycomposition "Nakatini Suite" and Jesse Sharp's swinging modal trip, "Peyote Song No. III," with its swirling soprano solo. In keeping with the communal nature of the Arkestra, the other two compositions, "The Call" and "Quagmire Manor at Five A.M." are also by Arkestra members. But at the center of the music is the builder of the Ark, the visionary whose original call to action started a movement whose legacy continues to this day -- Horace Tapscott. Vinyl-only release, 180 gram pressing by Pallas, fully licensed from Nimbus West founder Tom Albach.) 25.00
INOYAMALAND - Danzindan Pojidon LP (wrwtfw - Originally released on Yen Records in 1983 and produced by Haruomi Hosono. Official reissue of Yasushi Yamashita and Makoto Inoue’s quintessential ambient/minimal/electronic/environmental album) 24.00
JOSEPH ALLRED - Traveler LP (feeding tube - "Welcome to the second album we've done with string maestro, Joseph Allred. Unlike O Meadowlark (FTR 451LP), this one features a smattering of Joseph's vocals, although his main thrust is still glistening instrumentals. The title song is a goddamn sad one, sung with reedy elegance, dealing with a kidnapped dog that serves as a stand-in for all earthly beings, full of both frailty and resilience. Another vocal track, 'The Crown' (which inspired the cover art), stems from a long conversation Joseph had with Max Ochs. It squeezes the inherently surreal aspects of dream-walking into semi-conventional blues tautology, and the fit is just right. The third and last vocal, 'O Columbia,' is a particular favorite, based as it is upon the some of the same melodies Fahey swiped for 'In Christ There Is No East or West,' although Allred takes things in all new directions. I had been a tad leery when I heard Joseph would be singing on this new session -- being so enamored of his unadorned instrumental technique -- but these tunes won me over in the course of a few plays. Maybe there'll be more verbal-content in his future? We would not say, 'no.' But the meat of this album remains Joseph's splendid inventions for guitar and banjo. His piece for Glenn Jones, 'The Giant Who Shrank Himself,' is a beautiful suite, worthy of its concept (that Jones is a behemoth who has to shrink himself in order to deal with us normals). It flows like the sweetest stream of wine you, I or anyone might imagine. 'Single Me a Stranger' is another literal killer, with sliding chords evoking the 1872 lynching and curse-fulfillment of an unlucky newcomer in the small Tennessee town where Allred grew up. It's spell-binding. As is 'Mark's Overture,' a banjo piece inspired by a homeless music critic in Cambridge, Mass. Another top-notch album by this great player. If you don't know Allred already, you will soon." --Byron Coley, 2019) 25.00
K. LEIMER / MARC BARRECA - chain of being LP (Ltd. to 300 copies, letterpress sleeve, incl. 6 letterpress cards Avantgarde electronic ambient walking through the paths of Brian Eno, Harold Budd or Roedelius. A conceptual and contemporary approach to Early music, exploring its ambiences, timbres and feelings. Delicate experimentation with sound textures where different tones of white noise can meet the strings from a viola da gamba. A cinematic work, very touching and emotional. Almost mystic, spiritual ambient.) 24.00

MAGGI PAYNE - Arctic Winds DLP (aguirre - Fully immersive electronic music by US composer Maggi Payne, inspired by the arctic winds. Maggi Payne's sound worlds invite the listeners to enter the sound and be carried with it, experiencing it from the inside out in intimate detail. The sounds are almost tactile and visible. The music is based on location recordings, with each sound carefully selected for its potential—its slow unfolding revealing delicate intricacies—and its inherent spatialization architecting and sculpting the aural space where multiple perspectives and trajectories coexist. With good speakers, some space in your schedule, and a mind-body continuum willing to resonate with Payne’s electroacoustic journey, but then it will take you to places that other music can’t reach. From the sounds of dry ice, space transmissions, BART trains, and poor plumbing she immerses the listener in a world strangely unfamiliar. Maggi Payne is a composer, video artist, recording engineer, photographer, and flutist and is Co-Director of the Center for Contemporary Music and a faculty member at Mills College, in the San Francisco Bay Area.) 25.00
MAGGI PAYNE - Ahh-A LP (aguirre - Gatefold sleeve, ltd. to 500 copies Originally composed by Maggi Payne between 1984-1987 for the performance group Technological Feets. Formed by video artist Ed Tennenbaum in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1981, the group combines dance, live video processing and music. Ahh-Ahh was first released in 2012 on Root Strata. Composed on an Apple II computer & various early sampling devices, Payne's compositions are a vibrant response to the call from the moving body. Populated with buoyant pulses, graceful analogue swells, dense fog-like drones and cascading rhythms that shift in space, AHH-AHH is a vital document of not only these early collaborations, but of computer based music as well. She studied with many greats in the field, including Gordon Mumma, Robert Ashley & David Berhman. ) 21.00
MILLION BRAZILIANS - Urban Fossickated Octave LP (feeding tube - Beautiful new LP (the seventh, I believe), from this wonderfully abstract outfit, who were birthed in the shadow of Smegma (Portland, OR), but have since relocated to Maine. The foundational members of the band are Grant Corum (keyboards, vocals, tin whistle, vocals) and Suzanne Stone (alto sax, khene, vocals). For this album, recorded by Big Blood's Caleb Mulkerin, they are joined by Caleb himself (tape loops and treatments) and Tom Kovacevic (piano and synth), both of whom played together back in Cerberus Shoals. The quartet is hot. Even when it's a trio. The music has a blocked-out and dreamy quality, with jazzoid touches and perhaps less of an ethnographic quality than some of the band's work. But the music also exists in large chunks, which are moved around in a way that almost recalls (strategically, if not sonically) groups like Colorado's Mnemonists/Biota collective. There's a heavy and reflective quality to all the sounds generated and how they are shaped. The album takes its title from the work of the late visionary artist, Paul Laffoley, from whom the band learned many lessons, and for whom the music stands as a sort of threnody. And the sounds here seem to inhabit some of the same psychic space as Laffoley's work -- creating panels of aural architecture with Mandalic balance and flow. Million Brazilians' music has lots of depth and a shifting focus that makes it hard to identify as any particular brand of music. But as Duke Ellington so elegantly put it, 'If it sounds good, it is good.' And Urban Fossickated Octave sounds more than good. Take it from the Duke. And then some." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.= 25.0
NAP EYES - Snapshot of a Beginner LP (jajagurwar - This one’s for the procrastinators and the slow learners. This one’s for the bungled and the botched, for the fumbled and humbled. This one’s for the late bloomers, and ultimately, Nap Eyes latest full length 'Snapshot of a Beginner' is proof that sometimes, the late bloomers bloom brightest.) 21.00
NURSE WITH WOUND - Rock 'n Roll Station DLP (Reissue of this mesmerizing record including an unreleased alternate mix of "Subterranean Zappa Blues". Hypnotic rhythms made of slow minimal beats, industrial textures, intoxicating drones and repetitive voices that seem to merge from dreams. Everything built by two of the most brilliant industrial music minds: Steven Stapleton and Colin Potter.) 28.00
O YUKI CONJUGATE - Peyote LP (bfe - One standout record of of tribal ambient, Peyote is a musical trip well worth taking. Originally released in 1991 on cd and now released on vinyl for the first time. O Yuki Conjugate (OYC) are an English post-industrial/ambient musical group founded in 1982 in Nottingham by Roger Horberry and Andrew Hulme and still - intermittently - active today. Originally inspired by the spirit and sound of post-punk, they soon started pioneering their own brand of ambient at a time (early 80s) when few people were interested in such a low-key approach. Their music has been variously described as 'ambient', 'fourth world', 'ethnic', 'tribal' and 'dark wave'; the band prefer to call it 'dirty ambient’. OYC on this occasion were: C.Elliott / R.Horberry / T.Horberry / A.Hulme with Maneesh Chandra; tablas 1, 8 Dave Collins; percussion 1, 2, 3, 4; berimbau 2; nose singing & chant 4 John Kaukis: keyboards 1, 3, 5 Chris Lucas: vocals 1, 7 Kenneth F Yates: percussion & chant 4; keyboards 7 Instrumentation: tongue drums, roto toms, bongos, congas, big bean, found percussion, drum machine, wind chimes, loops, frying pan, bass, samples, keyboards, fractal guitar, e-bow, flutes, chants, wildlife Engineered by Joe King. Recorded and digitally mastered at Frontier, Nottingham Aug 1988 - Feb 1990.) 25.00
PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS - Viscerals LP (rocket - I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig” reasoned George Bernard Shaw. “You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.” True to form, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs have left the wiser of us aware that they are no band to be messed with. In the seven years since this band’s inception, the powerful primal charge at their heart has been amplified far beyond the realms of their original imagination. What’s more, no one has been more taken aback by this transformation than the band themselves. This upward trajectory has done nothing to make the Newcastle-based quintet complacent however, as they’ve used the cumulative force behind them as fuel for their most ambitious and hard-hitting record yet. Viscerals, their third proper, is an enormous leap forward in confidence, adventure and sheer intensity even from their 2018 breakthrough King Of Cowards.) 26.00
RASHIED ALI / FRANK LOWE - Duo Exchange DLP (survival - The digital version of this release contains only a portion of the material on the 2xLP, and none of the previously unissued recordings. A Free Jazz masterpiece is again on the block—bigger and better than ever. Rashied Ali / Frank Lowe Duo Exchange is legitimately re-released on LP for the first time, mastered from original tapes for the first time, and expanded with nearly an hour’s music from the session never before heard. You know Duo Exchange as the flagship release of Rashied Ali’s Survival Records. When the record was made, Survival still belonged jointly to Ali and Frank Lowe, and the recording sessions done at Marzette Watts’s studio were the maiden voyage for their partnership. With the release of the record in 1973, Ali and his family and Frank Lowe and his family all became executives and clerks helping to get the word out. And getting the records out—at loft shows and Village record haunts. Survival was on its way. The message of untamed tenor saxophone and Ali’s drums should sound familiar: That’s the combination that made Jazz history in Ali’s 1967 duets with his then-employer, John Coltrane. What eventually came out as Interstellar Space is its own pinnacle of the genre, but its release was still in the future when Duo Exchange was waxed. Frank Lowe and Rashied Ali went into studio to capture the vehemence bursting forth nightly in the lofts. And, as recently celebrated by Soul Jazz Records, they, also capitalized in two further tracks on the delicacy of low-amplitude Free Jazz. (Trane in his Kulu Se Mama era pioneered this as well, and would develop it further with Alice Coltrane on board in his last two years) This release not only restores those sections of the original record (inexplicably excised from early CD releases) but expands it with fascinating outtake versions that rephrase the familiar tracks. The entire project benefits from a new mix of the original 4-channel tapes: You hear the pristine bite of that raw energy for the classic master takes, the sections that didn’t fit on the record, and multiple unissued alternative versions of both. ) 50.00
RUPA - disco jazz LP (numero - Back in Stock - Barely disco and hardly jazz, Rupa Biswas’ 1982 LP is the halfway point between Bollywood and Balearic. Tracked in Calgary’s Living Room Studios with a crack team of Indian and Canadian studio rats alike, Disco Jazz is a perfect fusion of East and West. Sarod and synthesizer intricately weaving around one another for 37 transcendent minutes, culminating in the viral hit “Aaj Shanibar.” Remastered from original analogue source material and with he permission and blessing of the producers and performers.) 26.00
STEVE REICH - Berkeley November 7, 1970 LP (alternatuve fox - Alternative Fox delivers a landmark release in the history of minimalism with a live performance documented from one of the genre's key figures: Steve Reich. Recorded live at Berkeley University in the 1970s (home also to key minimalism figures Terry Riley and La Monte Young), this performance sees Reich deliver some of his now legendary compositions, such as the shifting tape-loop experimentation of "My Name Is", whereby vocals are cut-up, looped, and played at different speeds to create constantly shifting combinations. Similar to his "It's Gonna Rain", it's utterly disorientating and makes for an absorbing listening whilst doffing a cap to cut-up techniques championed by early Dadaists and later Brion Gyson and Burroughs. The two-part "Piano Phase" demonstrates the effects of playing minimalistic notes on two separate pianos at slightly different speeds, so the two drifting an out of phase with each other. The effects are highly meditative, causing subtle rhythmic mutations throughout the piece, whilst "Phase Patterns" explores a similar technique albeit with a grainer electric organ. Last but not least, "Four Organs" explores the effects of sustained chords on multiple organs, set amongst a perpetual maraca, whereby the combination of interlocking chords on the separate instruments amalgamate to form a dense, textured tonal tapestry. 180 gram vinyl.) 21.00
STEVE ROACH - Quiet Music 2 LP (telephone explosion - Quiet Music is a collection of pieces created by Steve Roach between 1983 and 1986 in respect for silence. The gentle electronics of Roach's synthesizers mix with flute, electric piano and nature sounds flow like breath, enveloping the listener in a sustained, delicate and translucent atmosphere. Quiet Music was originally released as a three tape cassette series in 1986 on Fortuna Records and is now being issued as a complete series on vinyl for the first time ever. After Structures From Silence was released, Steve was receiving invitations to create music for the emerging meditation yoga and healing arts community in Los Angeles. Quiet Music 2 was inspired by Steve spending a lot of time in deserts and was created as a natural progression from Structures From Silence, and the more nocturnal feeling of Quiet Music 3 were pieces designed for Steve's personal healing practices. The Quiet Music series was released in a timeline that is often seen as linear but this music was created directly alongside the dynamic fully electronic albums like Now, Traveler, and Empetus. In the early '80s Steve would be shifting between the invigorating sequencer-percussive driven music and then move directly into weightless drifts and contemplative spaces. This way of creating grew naturally out of a desire to not settle into one place sonically and to nourish himself with a space that could be creative and fine-tuned, creating a calm and renewing zone while living within the hectic pace of urban life in Los Angeles.“) 25.00

YUSUF LATEEF - Hikima: Creativity LP (key system - Key System Recordings present a reissue of Yusef Lateef's Hikima: Creativity, originally released in 1983. In the early 1980s, famed jazz saxophonist and musical luminary Yusef Lateef traveled to Nigeria as a Senior Research Fellow to study, write, and teach at Ahmadu Bello University. He cut this record while there; pressed locally in Nigeria, it remained virtually unknown by jazz fans and collectors for over 30 years. On Hikima, Lateef leads a nonet of African musicians in seven compositions that fuse his deep blues and jazz roots with native Nigerian instruments, drums and chants. The sounds stretch from meditative and melancholic to urgent and unrelenting. A singular recording impossible to classify or box in. Lovingly pressed to vinyl by Key System Recordings, a new imprint dedicated to progressive and underground music of all types helmed by Jonathan Sklute, founder of NYC vinyl boutique Good Records. V/A - Guasa, Cununo Y Marimba - Afro-Colombian Music From The Pacific Coast DLP (vampisold - The music of the Colombian Pacific is one of the greatest treasures of Colombia and its African past, but not many people remember the songs recorded on anthologies, which are largely a forgotten chapter of Colombia's musical history. It comprises genres such as currulao and chirimía and many others that are yet to be discovered by most Latin music lovers. Heavy drumming combines with hypnotic vocals and the sounds of the marimba, clarinet and euphonium in this selection of Afro-Colombian music from the Pacific Coast. This compilation includes recordings by artists like: Gertrudis Bonilla, Peregoyo y su Combo Vacaná, Markitos Micolta, La Sonora del Pacífico de Cachito Vidal, Julián y su Combo, Buscajá_ in an outstanding selection of songs that covers the early 70s through the 00s and are reissued here for the first time. FRANK LOWE - The Loweski CD (esp - This track is the unreleased beginning portion of this 1973 Frank Lowe concert that was released as Black Beings. This incredible performance is filled with the fire and drive Frank Lowe was projecting on his tenor sax in 1973. This extended track titled "The Lowesky" is set in a five part suite form. Each performer is allowed ample time to express his individual contributions to this phenomenal group. The Band: Frank Lowe-tenor sax, Joseph Jarman-soprano, Raymond Lee Cheng (The Wizard)-violin, William Parker-bass and drummer Rashid Sinan perform admirably on this 38 minute performance, which contains minor feedback on the original recording.) 15.00
FRANK LOWE QUINTET - Soul Folks CD (no more records -Warehouse find of the last copies of this long unavailable 2001 release Soul Folks is a live date from 1998, a celebration of Frank Lowe's lyrical side. The group explodes with raw beauty and emotion. There is a sweet soul that enraptures you upon listening as the music swings -- hard. Featuring Bertha Hope(piano), Jack Walrath (trumpet), Steve Neil (bass) and Ralph Peterson (drums).) 16.00
FRANK LOWE / BILLY BANG QUARTET - One For Jazz CD (no more - Warehouse find of the last copies of this long unavailable 2001 release. Frank Lowe and Billy Bang pay tribute to the late Denis "Jazz" Charles with studio date One For Jazz. The three musicians worked together extensively in their '70s group The Jazz Doctors. Bang and Lowe pay tribute to their old friend by playing some serious music. Nobody plays like Bang or Lowe; they need the heavy rhythm section of Ed Schuller on bass and Abby Rader on drums to balance them out. People are still talking about their debut at the Vision Festival in NY.) 16.00
FRANK LOWE - Black Beings CD (ESP - This version of Black Beings contains of 15 minutes of additional material thought to have been lost. When he started out on ESP-Disk', Frank Lowe was one of those hard-blowing tenor saxophonists we think of when we heard the phrase "free jazz." Born in Memphis, he moved to San Francisco and, while visiting New York, began playing with Alice Coltrane (on whose album World Galaxy he made his recording debut in 1971), Sun Ra, Rashied Ali, and Noah Howard, and eventually moved to the Big Apple. On his debut as a leader, Lowe was confident enough to share the frontline with the Art Ensemble of Chicago's Joseph Jarman, who sticks to soprano and alto saxes here. This album is also notable as the recording debut of bassist William Parker, who has gone on to become an elder statesman of the genre and a ubiquitous presence on the New York scene. And then there is the mystery of the violinist originally credited only as The Wizard. Speculation long ran rampant, with one eminent jazz critic declaring not only that it was Leroy Jenkins under a pseudonym, but "quite recognizable" as such. Consider that a compliment to Raymond Lee Cheng, whom we now know it to have been; he recorded with Lester Bowie two years later as Raymund Cheng. That is not the only discovery unveiled on ESP's 2008 reissue of this classic. ESP's Michael Anderson went into the vaults and discovered unreleased music that was edited out to fit the time confines of the LP. "In Trane's Name" is now 33:29 rather than 25:00; the Jarman-penned "Thulani" is 22:09 compared to 15:55. One listen quickly reveals that the glory of this album is thoroughly enhanced by the additional music) 15.00
NEW YORK ART QUARTET - New York Art Quartet CD (esp - Roswell Rudd assembled the newly formed New York Quartet for an afternoon recording session at Bell Sound Studios in midtown Manhattan. They were joined by a small, youthful appearing individual, the poet Amiri Baraka. Their engineer was the late Art Crist, an accomplished pianist. I was introduced to Lewis Worrell, Amiri Baraka and John Tchicai. The group was short lived. I heard them again 40 years later, when they reassembled for a concert at the South Street Seaport in New York City, opening for Sonic Youth at the invitation of Thurston Moore. Lewis Worrell, who had vanished from the scene, was replaced on bass by Reggie Workman.?-- Bernard Stollman) 15.00
